Tin Man Project

Pre-Algebra students studied surface area and volume of 3-dimensional figures.
Students were tasked with taking pyramids, prisms, and cylinders and creating a Tin Man. Students had to complete all the measuring and calculations using the processes and formulas learned in class lessons to determine how much tin foil would be needed to cover their Tin Man, without running out or having foil left over. After calculating and receiving the tin foil, students had to cover the pieces and put together their Tin Man. Decorating the Tin Man was optional, but fun!

Students learned the importance of measuring twice, comparing calculations, and that rounding errors can seriously mess up the overall total. Teamwork, cooperation, and time management were also important skills for ensuring completion of the project.
