Philosophy for Middle School Volleyball and Basketball
At the 6th grade level, the philosophy is to allow any and all players who register to participate, and teams will be split evenly based on ability. They will play in a developmental league that will allow all the opportunity to play and grow.
At the 7th grade level, the competitive edge goes up a notch. All boys/girls will be allowed to participate in volleyball/basketball but will be divided by ability into a "competitive" and "recreational" team (when numbers allow for two teams). This allows all interested students to participate in the sport, but one team will participate in a competitive league and the other in a recreational league.
At the 8th grade level, the boys/girls will, for the first time, experience an actual "tryout." There is no longer a "recreational" team at the 8th grade level. This allows the boys/girls who are not as developed in skill as their peers to have a year to pursue extra help with athletic skills on their own or allow them to pursue a different area of interest.
Athletic Directors and varsity head coaches have the discretion to adjust the number of teams and the number of players on each team. This amendment will be agreed upon by the Athletic Directors and the varsity head coach.
