Black History Month - Ruby Bridges

Today we celebrate Ruby Bridges, who at the age of 6 became the first African American child to attend and desegregate an all-white elementary school in the South.
For the entire school year, she was escorted every day to class by U.S. Marshals due to the violent mobs that waited for her at William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. The bravery of the first grader and her family had an immeasurable impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Today 65-year old Ms. Bridges is an active equal rights advocate, having established The Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance and create change through education.

”Each and every one of us is born with a clean heart. Our babies know nothing about hate or racism. But soon they begin to learn – and only from us. We keep racism alive. We pass it on to our children. We owe it to our children to help them keep their clean start.” - Ruby Bridges
