Black History Month

In Wednesday’s chapel service, Candy Coonfield, Upper School Choral Director, discussed the history of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”.
The poet and novelist James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) composed this poem to honor Booker T. Washington; his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, set the poem to music. It was later adopted and dubbed the “Negro National Anthem” by the NAACP.  At the end of the presentation, Cheray Smith, Middle School Music Director, sang the first and third verses of the anthem to close chapel. #LiftEveryVoice #CasciacelebratesBlackHistory
