Kinnaman Receives Prize for Poem

Freshman Gracie Kinnaman won an Honorable Mention prize for poetry in the East Central University Scissortail High School Creative Writing Contest.
Out of over 400 entries, she was in the top 13.  Her poem is titled "There is a Line" and was submitted as part of Mrs. Kennedy's  creative writing class curriculum. The contest director, Professor Joshua Grasso, PhD, had glowing praise for Gracie's work: "Your poems were all magnificent, and yet 'There is a Line' stuck out to the judges as your most accomplished--and indeed, one of the most memorable poems of the entire contest. It was concise, powerful, honest, and unguarded. It also sounded like the work of someone twice your age! It's a raw poem of inequality, and the difficulty of straddling two worlds in the quest for education. You have a unique voice, and your poem, too, was unlike any other poem in the contest. Your work is very impressive and I hope to read more of your work in the future--either in this contest, or in a book of your own poetry!"
