Van Doren Has Amazing Experience at Cornell

This summer I completed a college credit course called "Animal Science: Sustainable Animal Husbandry" at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Throughout this course, I learned about the key areas of sustainability in agriculture, the physiology and behavior of various farm animals along with their relationships with humans, specific types of nutrition plans for animal grazing, and different farm production and management systems. Besides the knowledge that I received during the lectures, another part of the course was the lab period, where I had the chance to use my new knowledge to interact with the animals as I visited many sheep, goat, and cattle farms along with the equine (horse) research facility that was on campus.
My favorite part of the course was one of the labs where I went to a sheep and goat dairy farm, learned the differences between their milk and a cow’s, observed how their milk is attained through machines, and was able to hang out and play with some adorable lambs! Overall, my experience at Cornell University was eye-opening as it not only gave me a taste of what college life will be like, but how to balance my work, activities, and social life so that I can have more amazing experiences in my future college.
