Dear Cascia Community,

There are few people in one’s life who have the ability to make a lasting positive impact on them. Sister Mary Murrihy, SSJ (“Sr. Mary”) was one of those people for me and countless other students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends of Cascia. Whether it was through her unmatched command of her classroom or her simple acts of kindness such as candy from Russell Stover or an Irish coffee, Sr. Mary was a true Cascia legend!

She taught us how to countdown in Latin (at the end of every exam), she introduced us to Michener (“Excuse me while I fetch you a crying towel”) and Kipling (Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), she taught us to be “positive action kids”," she boosted our SAT scores, she taught us discipline (pencil in its holder), she taught us that one does not learn proper grammar by “singing the English language” (a critique on the Shirley English method in the 90s), she taught us appreciation for the sacrifices our families made to give us the opportunity to attend Cascia, and most importantly she taught us love and reminded us that at all times "God is present in our lives." Sr. Mary’s legend grew with each class that passed through her classroom and just as students grow from sixth grade to senior year, so did their love and appreciation for her.

On behalf of the Cascia Hall Alumni Association, I wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for Sr. Mary’s selfless service to Cascia Hall. Although there are no words by which we can adequately express our condolences on Sr. Mary’s passing, we will never forget the academic and life lessons she taught us. "Our hearts are restless until they rest in you."

Sincerely,
