Black History Month – Dr. May Edward Chinn

In last week’s celebration of Black History Month, Gemma Booth, Assistant Principal, offered a reflection during Thursday’s chapel on the life of Dr. May Edward Chinn (1896-1980).
This pioneer was the first African American woman to graduate from Bellevue Hospital Medical College (now NYU School of Medicine). She went on to earn her master’s degree in public health from Columbia University. Dr. Chinn was a woman who pursued her education, a career in family medicine and in medical research in spite of the many obstacles that she encountered.
